windstruck and my sassy girl - June 9, 2005 (Multiply) 5:00 PM

i have always been a movie fan. however, i love chinese movies the best. even though their storylines are kinda shallow, i still love them. there are pinoy movies that are like that, but what i love about chinese movies is that i dont know who the actors are - what movies they have starred in, their personal lives, gossip, etc. i mean, take the hong kong movie love on a diet for instance and put pinoy actors in it. somehow i cant imagine the overweight heroine being played by a fattened heart evangelista or judy ann santos while the overweight hero is being played by a fattened piolo pascual or geoff eigenmann (who is chubby, but not a good actor). i would not want to watch it if that happens. heck, it has been a long time since i've seen a local movie in a moviehouse

the current rage around here is koreanovelas. that's what they call korean tv dramas. the taiwanese drama meteor garden started the asianovela craze back in 2003. i loved meteor garden. i've also watched the korean comedy-drama lovers in paris. aside from those two, no other tv drama got me hooked
our cable service provider does not offer the channel star mandarin, wherein i watch hong kong movies before. i turned to the arirang channel to have my fix of korean movies instead

my friends recommended the movie my sassy girl. i bought a pirated dvd (yes, pirated, so sue me). the movie is funny. it stars the pretty ji-hyun jun (for whom ches could give up her femininity...hehe). kyun-woo is a college student who met a drunk girl (played by ji-hyun) in a train. the girl vomited and called him "honey", in which case kyun-woo has no choice but to help her. unexpected events made the pair closer to each other, but time came when they have to part ways. the ending is still worth it. romantic with a touch of fantasy, my sassy girl is one of the best romantic comedies i have seen in a while. the "girl" has a violent, yet playful and charming side. the guy who plays kyun-woo was not very attractive, but his cute faces and antics could make a girl sigh...

anyway, i heard hollywood is making a remake. violent reaction: not another remake reminiscent of ringu or ju-on

most people i know loved MSG better than windstruck, but i think otherwise. windstruck also stars ji-hyun jun. she plays a pretty but violent cop, officer kyung-jin yeo. she met a physics teacher named myung-woo in a case of mistaken identity. they went through a lot together, but time came when myung-woo has to leave her. he died while trying to help kyung-jin catch a criminal. he came back as the wind, always to be there for her until the 48th day after his death when he has to leave her forever. kyung-jin tried to end her life lots of times, first by taking a drug, then by jumping off a building. she failed on both suicide attempts, and instead tried to get herself killed while on police duty. it's tragic, the way kyung-jin has not really showed myung-woo how much she loves him, and she kept on blaming herself about his death. it broke my heart when myung-woo died in kyung-jin's arms.

still the movie ended in a good way, but not in the way i wanted it to be.
i guess what made me get hooked on movies from other asian countries is the way they are made. they may have a common storyline, but the use of scenery and music made the film more enchanting.

it is better to watch asian movies in their original languages. i think the use of dubbing ruins the actors' emotions and use of dialogue. you better read those subtitles fast though
